Novena to the Immaculate Conception

Novena to the Immaculate Conception

Hail Mary, full of grace and blessed more than all women. Singular Virgin, sovereign and perfect, chosen as the Mother of God and preserved by Him from all guilt from the first instant of your Conception. Just as through Eve death came to us, through you life comes to us, for by the grace of God you have been chosen to be the Mother of the new people that Jesus Christ has formed with his blood. To you, purest Mother, restorer of the fallen lineage of Adam and Eve, we come trusting and pleading in this novena, to ask you to grant us the grace to be true children of yours and of your Son Jesus Christ, free from all stain of sin. Remember, Most Holy Virgin, that you have been made the Mother of God not only for your dignity and glory, but also for our salvation and the benefit of all humankind. Remember that it has never been heard that anyone who has sought your protection and implored your help has been abandoned. Do not leave me, then, because if you leave me, I will be lost; and I do not want to leave you either, rather every day I want to grow more in your true devotion. And grant me mainly these three graces: first, never to commit a mortal sin; second, a great appreciation for Christian virtue; and third, a good death. Additionally, give me the particular grace that I ask of you in this novena (make here the petition you wish to obtain).

Prayer description

Traditional novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, proclaiming that she was preserved from all stain of original sin from her conception. It is prayed for nine days —from November 29 to December 7— as preparation for the solemnity on December 8, asking the Virgin for purity of heart and growth in Christian virtues.

How to pray

A novena is prayed over nine consecutive days, with the intention of requesting a special grace, giving thanks for a received favor, or preparing for a religious feast. Each day usually begins with the Sign of the Cross and an introductory prayer. Then a meditation or reading specific to the day is performed, followed by specific prayers such as ejaculations, litanies, or petitions. Finally, it concludes with traditional prayers like the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. In some cases, there is a final prayer that is recited at the end of each day or especially on the last day. Consistency and devotion are fundamental to experiencing the novena with spiritual fruit.
