The Novena to the Apostle James the Greater —son of Zebedee and brother of Saint John— commemorates the first of the Twelve to shed his blood for Christ (†44). Patron of Spain and of the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, his testimony of missionary zeal and courage invites us to follow Jesus “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). For nine days, the faithful meditate on his calling, his journey with the Lord, and his martyrdom in Jerusalem, asking for his intercession to ignite faith, hope, and apostolic fervor in their own lives and in the Church.
Traditionally prayed from July 16 to 24, culminating on July 25 (the solemnity of St. James the Apostle), although it can be started at any time of need. Each day begins with the Act of Contrition and the initial prayer to the apostle. Then, the specific intention and reflection are read, and the prayer of the day is recited. To conclude the day, the ejaculation and the final daily prayer can be added. At the end of the nine days, the litany to St. James with its verse and concluding prayer are recited. It is recommended, during the novena, to go to confession, participate in the Eucharist, and perform a work of mercy—especially welcoming the pilgrim or helping those in need—following the spirit of the Way.
