The Novena to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus —the "Little Flower" of Lisieux (1873-1897), Doctor of the Church and universal patroness of missions— introduces the faithful to the path of spiritual childhood: becoming small before God, surrendering with absolute trust, and offering ordinary acts with extraordinary love. Her promise to "spend heaven doing good on earth" and to shower a "rain of roses" has inspired countless graces. Over nine days, the virtues of Therese are meditated upon, her intercession is implored, and the grace to love Jesus with simplicity and missionary zeal is requested.
Traditionally prayed from September 22 to 30 to culminate on October 1 (feast of St. Thérèse), although it can be started at any time. Each day begins with the Act of Contrition and the initial prayer; then the specific intention and reflection are proclaimed, and the prayer of the day is recited. It concludes with the daily ejaculation or final prayer. Upon completing the nine days, the litanies to St. Thérèse are prayed with their verse and concluding prayer. During the novena, it is recommended to go to confession, participate in the Eucharist, pray the Rosary, and perform small acts of hidden charity, following the example of the saint.
