The Novena to Saint Rita of Cascia honors the 'advocate of the impossible,' a 15th-century Augustinian (1381-1457) who lived as a wife, mother, widow, and religious with heroic patience. Known for the stigmatization of a thorn from Christ's crown on her forehead and for countless miracles of reconciliation and healing, Saint Rita continues to obtain graces where all human hope seems extinguished. Throughout these nine days, the faithful contemplate her virtues of forgiveness, humility, and trust and ask for her help to carry their own crosses with joy.
Traditionally prayed from May 13 to May 21 to culminate on May 22, the feast of Saint Rita, although it can be started at any time of need. Each day begins with the Act of Contrition and the initial prayer to Saint Rita; then the day's intention and reflection are read, and the corresponding prayer is recited. It concludes with the daily ejaculation or the final prayer. At the end of the novena, the litanies to Saint Rita are prayed with their verse and concluding prayer. During the novena, it is recommended to confess, participate in the Eucharist, and perform a concrete act of reconciliation or charity.
