The Novena to Saint Martin de Porres (1579-1639), a Dominican friar from Lima known as the 'Saint of the Broom,' celebrates his boundless charity, his humility that embraced the simplest tasks, and his absolute trust in Providence. Miraculous in life and after his death, he is the patron of social justice, interracial peace, barbers, and the poor. During these nine days, the faithful meditate on his virtues of humble service, concrete love for those in need, and joy in sacrifice, asking for his intercession to grow in mercy and fraternity.
Traditionally prayed from October 25 to November 2, to culminate on November 3 (the feast of Saint Martin de Porres), although it can be started at any time of need. Each day begins with the Act of Contrition and the initial prayer to Saint Martin; then the intention and reflection of the day are read, and the corresponding prayer is recited. It concludes with the daily ejaculation or final prayer. At the end of the novena, the litanies to Saint Martin are prayed with their verse and the concluding prayer. It is recommended to go to confession, participate in the Eucharist, and perform a concrete act of service—especially towards the poor, sick, or marginalized—during the novena.
