The Novena to Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226), founder of the Order of Friars Minor and patron of ecology, introduces the faithful to the spirit of evangelical poverty, humble joy, and universal love that characterized the Poor Man of Assisi. For nine days, the virtues of Francis are contemplated —his radical detachment, his missionary zeal, his tenderness with every creature, and his longing for peace—, asking for his intercession to renew the Church and convert the heart of every Christian to the Gospel "sine glossa."
It is traditionally prayed from September 25 to October 3, in preparation for the solemnity of Saint Francis (October 4), although it can be started at any time of need. Each day begins with the Act of Contrition and the initial prayer to the saint; then the intention and reflection for the day are proclaimed, and the prayer of the day is recited. It concludes with the ejaculation or the daily final prayer. At the end of the nine days, the litanies to Saint Francis are prayed with their verse and the concluding prayer. It is recommended to go to confession, participate in the Eucharist, practice a concrete act of charity towards the poor, and, if possible, perform an action of care for creation.
