The Christmas Novena, popularly known as Las Posadas in much of Mexico and Central America, commemorates the nine months of gestation and, in particular, the nine days leading up to the birth of Jesus. From December 16th to 24th, the journey of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary seeking lodging in Bethlehem is remembered; each day, families and neighbors gather to pray, sing, meditate, and share, preparing their hearts to receive the Christ Child on Christmas Eve.
Pray the novena from December 16 to 24. Each day: 1) Sign of the Cross and Act of Contrition; 2) Initial prayer specific to Las Posadas; 3) Reading of the intention and reflection of the day; 4) Prayer of the day; 5) Traditional song requesting lodging (optional in procession); 6) Daily final prayer; 7) Litany to the Child Jesus with its verse and final prayer. It is advisable to confess and receive communion during these days and practice acts of charity (sharing food, giving a 'colación', helping those in need) to live the anticipation of Christ with joy and solidarity.
